CHAPTER SIX

‘WHY THE FROWN, Santiago?’ Grace had stopped off at the cafeteria to grab a bowl of cereal for a patient when she’d seen him at one of the tables near the exit. Santiago was a paediatrician here at the hospital and one of Grace’s good friends. ‘Anything I can help with?’

He looked up at her and smiled. ‘You’re back! Did you have a good time in Cornwall?’

It had hardly been a good time. But she didn’t want to tell him that. Especially since her relationship with Diego was now at a new and unknown stage, after they’d been in surgery with the Garcia-Hernandez baby.

‘It was great. How are things with you?’

He shrugged. ‘Frustrating. I’ve got a patient I’m having problems diagnosing. Her test results are mostly clear, but she’s ill and I’m not sure what’s wrong with her.’

At that moment another member of staff—Caitlin, the cardiothoracic surgeon who had sent Grace and Diego an invitation to their wedding in Maravilla—appeared beside them. ‘Apologies, I don’t mean to butt in, but I couldn’t help but overhear what you said to Grace. I know an absolutely fabulous diagnostician called Elena who might be able to help you?’

Santiago looked up at her. ‘Is she in this hospital?’

Caitlin shook her head. ‘No. She’s in Mallorca. But she’s advised me on a couple of difficult cases before. I have her number, if you want it?’

He took a moment to consider it. ‘Sounds great. All help is welcome on this one.’

Grace frowned. ‘Do you mean Elena Solis? I think she’s the lady who helped out with one of our patients, too.’ She looked at Santiago. ‘She’s good. You ought to call her if you’re stuck.’

Santiago smiled at both of them. ‘I know when I’m beaten. Text me her number, Cait, when you have a spare moment.’

‘I will. It’s nice to have you back, Grace. We missed you!’ And Caitlin went on her way.

Grace watched her go. Caitlin was at the beginning of all the fabulous adventures her life would hold. She was about to get married to Javier Torres, another cardiothoracic surgeon. They’d been reunited after Caitlin had been tasked to operate on Javier’s sister. Quite the romance! And now their future was ahead of them.

Grace recalled how she’d missed out on the chance to plan her own wedding and make it the spectacular beach wedding she’d always wanted, whereas Caitlin was going to be married in the beautiful sprawling ancestral estate Maravilla, which belonged to Javier’s family. She could only imagine how much fun Caitlin had had planning that...

There was much that Grace wished she had done differently. Even the happiness of having her big day had been denied her. But she’d been so keen to marry Diego and then fly with him to Barcelona to live and find work.

Why did it sometimes feel that life was happening to everyone else except for her? Why did she feel as if she was standing still?

‘You okay?’ Santiago asked.

She blinked, pulled back to the present, and smiled at Santiago.
